"Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you." - Alexander Graham Bell’s first words on the telephone

27 October 2016

Ready to feel old?  It was over 43 years ago that Martin Cooper, an engineer with Motorola, made the first call from a mobile device.  It wasn’t called a cell phone then because “cells” didn’t yet exist.  Unfortunately, unlike Mr. Bell’s famous first call, we don’t have the words recorded for posterity.  I suspect it was something along the lines of, “Can you hear me now?  Is this thing on?  Check, check, check.  Testing 1, 2, 3.”

Well, another quote that might age you is, “We’ve come a long way, Baby!”  (Remember cigarette ads?)  Now the ubiquitous cell phone is an almost indispensible tool for everyone from elementary school children to aging grandparents.  (Of course only one of those groups drives down the freeway with their left signal flashing…in the left lane…doing 75 km/h…talking on the phone.  Hint: they are not driving a Mattel Big Wheel…they are probably in a PT Cruiser!)

At any rate, the cell phone isn’t just for calling any more.  It has become, along with the iPad, the remote control of choice in Home Automation industry.  While we used to have to put keypads (very expensive keypads) on the wall in every room, now the iPhone, iPad or Android device can control every device in your house and give you access to the Internet and, therefore, the world.  These spectacular technological gems have not only changed the way we interact with the world around us, they have changed the way we run our homes.

Are you interested in more Insight into how your cell phone can be made to work for you?  Give us a call.

Great discoveries and improvements invariably involve the cooperation of many minds. I may be given credit for having blazed the trail, but when I look at the subsequent developments I feel the credit is due to others rather than to myself.

- Alexander Graham Bell
